Patent attorney salaries? I’m a recent mech eng grad and I’ve always had patent law as a solid plan in the back of my head. I make a pretty decent salary as an engineer now, but are the patent attorney salaries I see on Google really representative of what’s realistic? I have seen anywhere from kk as the average. For me, it’d have to be significantly more than my engineering job to make law school and quitting to go back to school really worth it. It is easy to get misled by salaries. What is seldom mentioned is how small of a percentage of law school graduates get jobs at those firms. The range you found, kk, is not unreasonable for an experienced patent attorney. I have been doing the job for ten years and am quite happy with my compensation. But I know it’s tough to get started and not everyone is cut out for the job. All that is to say, get into the law if you think you are suited for it and would enjoy it, not because you think it will get you the biggest paycheck. It worked out well for me, but there are a lot of unhappy lawyers who are saddled with tremendous debt and work that they hate. Do you have any tips on getting started other than really think about if I’ll enjoy it? I think you misunderstand what people are telling you. No firm will just pay for you to go to law school after interviewing.

Law professors say they are seeing more students with strong science backgrounds make the leap into law, where they are receiving great interest from recruiters. For at least some students who might otherwise gravitate toward a science career, the promise of much higher salaries provides a powerful lure. To put it charitably, one reason people consider joining the legal profession is to cash in — lawyers make lots of money, right? Totally worth it. Instead, there are two distinct humps. This is an important discussion for lawyers to have, muuch I think it is also kake to stop and reflect on why hiring a lawyer is so expensive in the first place. On top of the considerable cost of acquiring a law degree, malpractice insurance, business overhead.

In fact, I think some wjy need to be reminded. But in order to do that, lawyers commit to much. Your problems are now my problems. When I go out to dinner with my wife, I talk about hearings and depositions. You may have heard the story about the lawyer who abandoned his Ferrari in rising floodwaters so he could make it to a hearing. Instead of taking the time to save his car, he abandoned it in order to get to court on time. Everyone was amazed except lawyers, who were like duh. Missing a hearing is not an option.

Lawyers are expensive because you get a lot for your money. You get someone who will abandon their precious supercar — or regular car — in rising floodwaters so he can attend your hearing. You get someone who will lose sleep worrying about your legal problem so you can finally get some rest. Lawyers have a pretty singular value proposition. We take care of legal problems for our clients. They can go back to sleeping through the night, and you start losing sleep, instead.

You worry about where to find the paperwork or file the forms or how to get to the hearing while they go about their daily lives. Nobody would expect an Uber driver to absorb the cost of a parking ticket just so she can pick you up where you want. Nobody expects an iPhone to absorb your stress and nobody thinks Facebook will really keep your secrets. So latent long as that high level of obligation is what you get for your legal fee, the fee can only drop so. That is easy to say but another thing entirely to.

Our obligations flow from our rules of professional conduct, most of which we cannot ask a client to waive. All we can do is limit the scope of representation — generally called unbundling legal services. Unbundling can make a lot of sense for some things, but it is not a panacea for lowering the cost of legal services.

How to find out how much car dealers make money

Outt outside a car dealership reveals an armada of shiny new vehicles. If you could look behind the curtains of the dealership, you would discover that each and every operation you are passing by is set up as a profit center—all of them competing for the money in your wallet. So who typically wins this war of dollars, and how does the dealer actually make any money? The answers might surprise you. Big dollars, factory fresh complete with that new car smell —you would think this is where the big bucks are kept, and in many ways you are correct. Because they are a high-ticket item, new car sales account for over hoe of the total gross sales at the dealer. Dealers secure inventory by borrowing money, sometimes from the carmaker, to get all those cars into the showroom and onto the lot. The longer the cars sit, the more interest the dealer has to pay on the loan.
